When you're looking to augment your sound with the tone-shaping capabilities of some of the world's most well-loved speaker cabinets, then the BIGBox series is for you.
Using an uncompromising signal chain, we've set out to capture the magic of giant wooden boxes, with strategically placed holes, stuffed with
insanely loud cone-shaped bits of mayhem, and glued together with the blood, sweat and tears of three generations of rock gods, grunts, and goram contenders... or something to that effect.
|
 | | |
Features
- Cabs sampled with up to 14 industry-standard microphones each with their own sound
- Up to 8 mic positions to dial in the right tone for your amp
- 9 different mic distances for different amounts of proximity effect, cabinet and room sound
- 500 or more IRs per cabinet* so you'll find the perfect match for your sound
- Edited for better phase coherence allowing you to more easily mix multiple IRs
- Clean, uncompromising signal chain that won't add undesirable color to your sound
- Cabs powered with Bryston 4B, known for flat freq. response, ample power, low distortion
- Recorded with Prism Sound Orpheus converters for top quality A/D and D/A conversion
- Sampled with a Neve 1073 and/or a pair of Neve 1084s, two of the most highly regarded preamps for recording guitar, or anything else for that matter
- Compatible with a wide range of recording software and convolution plug-ins (see Compatible Software) including Axe-Fx I & II ready sysex files**
* Take a look at the IR Matrix for each speaker cab for a complete listing of captured impulse responses for that cabinet.
**Axe-Fx I sysex files are truncated to 1024 samples to conform to its cabinet IR size limits, thus removing room reflections. Axe-Fx II files are truncated to 2048.
Mic Positions
|
|
We mic each sampled speaker from 8 positions. The primary positions include: Cap center, Cap 45° off axis, Cap edge, Cap edge 45° off axis, Cone middle, and Cone edge. Then we do a Room mic and a Back of the Cabinet mic.
The captured sound is brightest (contains the most high frequency content) at the "Cap center" position and gets progressively darker (more lows and less highs) as you move the
mic towards the edge of the cone. Depending on the position and the mic distance, the mic will pick up different aspects of the other speakers and the cabinet.
|
Each cabinet is sampled with a matched pair of Neumann KM84s and a pair of TC30s in an XY configuration. These are labeled RoomL and RoomR. We also use a KM84 or TC30 to sample the back of the cabinet.
We reverse the phase of this sample. It picks up mostly low end and may be useful when blended with a another mic signal.
Not every mic was sampled in every position and at every distance so check the cabinet's IR Matrix for a comprehensive listing.

Guitar Mics
- AKG C414B-ULS
The C414B-ULS is a 4-pattern condenser mic with an input transformer. We used it in mainly in cardioid, but threw in an omni room IR or two for kicks. It has fairly flat response
with a very slight dip in the upper-mids and a very noticeable proximity effect at close range (boosting the lows).
- Audix i5
The i5 is a dynamic mic with a scooped mid range and a big presence bump. In our work, we found it to be a bright mic without much low end that works best at close range or out towards the
cone on bright speakers like the Celestion Blue. It really seems to like the Jensen P12.
- Beyerdynamic M160
The M160 is a oddity among ribbons due to its tight cardioid pattern. Work it close for a nice proximity boost. Pull it back and enjoy the mellow highs. It's hypercardioid pattern keep the room sound at bay
even at a distance.
- Coles 4038
A flat ribbon mic. Big proximity effect, but nice and balanced if you give it some breathing room.
- Neumann U47
A classic microphone used in countless legendary recordings. Extended lows, sweet mid-range and smooth high-end.
- Neumann KM84
The KM84 has a flat frequency response which lends itself to use as a room mic. It's also nice when you want to capture the speaker as is, without adding a lot of coloration.
- Neumann M8/CMV563
We put this one up, not expecting too much and were pleasantly surprised, so we kept it in the lineup. The M8 has a "vintage" rolloff of the highs frequencies which makes
it nice for taming fizzy guitars and for use on bright speakers. It's also figure 8, so we had some fun with it and pointed its null point at the speaker to pick up mostly room reflections. We labeled these IRs, "NullAndWall". The reflections we captured with the Weber Blue
might make an especially nice slapback reverb if blended with another signal. It's also interesting to note that this very mic was used by the East Germans to broadcast anti-capitalist propaganda into West Germany, or so we were told.
- Neumann M7/CMV563
If it was good enough for the Beatles, then... well, ok... it's not a U47, but it's a similar capsule and on a CMV563 tube mic, it has some old school mojo of it's own.
- Neumann U87
This one's a studio standard. We were especially careful not to overload this guy which can make it sound a little "honky", in our opinion. It seems to have
less proximity effect than the C414 and picks up more high end. We did an omni room IR as well as a cardioid one.
- Royer R121
Another ribbon mic. You can get real beefy tones taking advantage of the proximity effect and placing it up close, on the cap or cap edge.
Smooth highs, and a nice balance at a distance. The figure 8 pattern lets in a little room which makes for a nice natural sound. We did the "NullAndWall" trick with this one, too.
- Sennheiser MD421N
The 421 is a dynamic mic with solid lows and a flat response until a significant boost starting around 1.5K. It will make just about anything cut
through the mix. It works very well off axis, too, if you want to roll off some of the presence and high end. We've got one of the vintage white ones with the tuchel connector and the funky, trailer park logo, which to our ears is more mellow sounding than the newer ones. It's wired differently than modern mics, so we reversed the phase on the pre when we recorded it.
- Sennheiser MD441
The 441's low-end response is similar to the 421 but it has fuller mids and less edgy upper-mids.
- Sennheiser MD409
The 409 rolls off the low-end before the 421 and has less edgy upper-mids and high-end. To us it sounds more like an SM57 with less peaky upper-mids.
- Shure SM7
Kind of like an SM57 that's all growed up and has stopped borrowing mom's car to take the girlfriend to rock shows to impress her with wicked moshpit wrestling moves... Yeah... we don't know what that means either.
Suffice to say, it's a lot like an SM57 with a less pronounced proximity effect up close (probably due to the recessed capsule) and extended, smoother highs. It has a similar vibe to the TAB57, so if the schedule was tight, we dropped the off axis positions on this one.
- Shure SM57
A studio staple on electric guitar. Aggressive upper mids. Some proximity effect. Rolled off highs. Try pairing it with an R121 for a little of the chocolate and peanut butter thing.
- TAB-Funkenwerk SM57
An SM57 with a replacement transformer made by TAB-Funkenwerk that extends the highs a bit and the lows a little bit more. Sounds like a crankier SM7 to us. You can judge for yourself.
- Electrovoice RE20
Take it out of the kick drum and use it on guitar. It's a detailed, well-balanced mic with ample low-end. It's muted proximity effect can be useful.
- Earthworks TC30/M50
The TC30 and M50 are high-end reference mics. They are flat as a pancake and have a phenomenal frequency response (3Hz-50KHz for the M50).
- Lawson L47
Based on the Neumann U47, this one popped up in a few of the sessions. See what you think.
- Blue Bottle/B4 (Room only)
High end tube mic with a nice neutral omni capsule that we thought would complement the other mics as room mics.
- Blue Bottle/M7
We occasionally threw the M7 on this behemoth (in case you didn't know, the BLUE Bottle is a BIG mic) and put it up, mostly for kicks. You may find the results useful.
- Heil PR30
Works well on metal guitar. Can sound harsh on on signals lacking in low-end.
Bass Guitar Mics
- AKG D12
The D12 is tuned for bass with a little boost between 60 and 100Hz and another around 5-7K for some click and string noise. Highly recommended. Frequency response 30Hz-15KHz
- AKG D112
The D112 is more scooped sounding than the D12 and has a presence peak a little lower, between 2-5K, for a click of a different color. Frequency response 20Hz-16KHz
- Audix D6
Incredibly scooped mic with a huge presence peak that exaggerates bass click. Not a lot going on in the mids. Interesting effect. Frequency response 30Hz-15KHz
- Beyerdynamic M380N
The moving-coil transducer in the M380 is essentially a small speaker driver giving it uber-lowend response of 15Hz and an even uber--er proximity effect. Can be boomy, and require some EQ, but also captures lows that other mics do not. Did we mention it's bi-directional. Frequency response 15Hz-20KHz
- Coles 4038
A flat ribbon mic. Big proximity effect and fragile, so 4" was as close as we ever put it on a bass cab. Nice balanced sound if you give it some breathing room. Frequency response 30Hz-15KHz
- Earthworks TC30
This thing has low-end down to 9Hz. For real, too. It's flat down to 9Hz and up to 30KHz. Omni with no proximity effect. It tells it like it is. Highly recommended. Frequency response 9Hz-30KHz
- Electrovoice RE20
Detailed, well-balanced mic with decent low-end. It's muted proximity effect makes it really useful on bass. Frequency response 45Hz-18KHz
- Heil PR40
Great low-end and big presence boost for cleaning up muddy bass lines. Frequency response 28Hz-18KHz
- Neumann U47FET
A studio staple on bass. Ours was once in service at Ramport studios, so it's possible that it sat in from of John Entwistle's stack back in the day ;-). Highly recommended. Frequency response 40Hz-16KHz
- Royer R121
Another ribbon mic. Fantastic on electric guitar and pretty good on bass, too. Like the Coles it has a big proximity effect and is fragile, so 4" was as close as we ever put it on a bass cab. Really shines at a distance. Frequency response 30Hz-15KHz
- Sennheiser e602
Not quite as scooped as the D6, but the mids are "subdued". Good for cleaning up muddy bass lines with a lot of low notes. Frequency response 20Hz-16KHz
- Sennheiser MD421
Great on bass for the same reasons it's awesome on electric guitar. Nice low-end and a presence boost to cut through in the mix. Frequency response 30Hz-17KHz
- Shure Beta52
Scooped when used up close. Becomes significantly brighter and more punchy the further you move it back. Frequency response 20Hz-10KHz
- Shure SM7
Not as much low-end as some of the other mics, which can be a good thing if you have a boomy bass line to tame. Great high end. Frequency response 50Hz-20KHz
- Shure SM57
We threw this in the lineup as an "effect" mic for a ratty bass sound, and just in case y'all wanted to use the bass cabs on guitar tracks. Even though the spec says it will theoretically go down to 40Hz, we're not "shure" what they were smoking when they wrote that. Frequency response 40Hz-20KHz--ish
Mic Distances
We sampled each speaker and microphone combination at up to 10 distances: 0", 0.5", 1", 2", 3", 4", 5", 6", 12", and Room. As the mic gets further from the speaker, the captured sound tends to get progressively brighter as the low-end drops off. You get more ambient room sound
and you pick up more from the other speakers and the different aspects of the cabinet resonance the further away you place the mic. The 0" starting position is right on the grill, but not touching it, or parallel to the baffle in the case of cabs without grills or grill-cloth.

Bogner Uberkab • Celestion Vintage 30s • Cabinet IR Library:
Impulse responses of a Bogner Uberkab. Vintage 30s never sounded so good... definition without sounding raspy. The Uberkab is loaded with both Celestion G12T-75s and Vintage 30s. So, because we're close mic'ing, we had to treat it as three cabs in one. We mic'ed the T-75s and tagged them with "Uberkab-T75". We mic'ed the Vintage 30s and tagged them with "Uberkab-V30". Then to get the vibe of both speakers in one IR, we did a 50/50 mix of both speakers and labeled them "Uberkab-T75V30". This set features the Vintage 30s and includes the 50/50 mix IRs, but not the close-mic'ed T-75s. They do bleed through, though. More so, the further away you put the mic.
Zipped archive available for immediate download contains 1373 impulse responses each at 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96Khz sampling rates, 16/24 bit, and Axe-Fx ready sysex files. See IR Matrix.

Speakerbox With the Speakerbox series we set out to capture the essential character of some legendary speaker and mic combinations with just a dash of color. To that end, we housed our speakers in a solid mahogany, open-backed cabinet. The cab's lightweight, resonant shell is designed to fill a room with 3 dimensional, lively tone rather than box it in and project it forward.
Speakerbox • Celestion Blue 12" • IR Library:
Impulse responses of a Celestion AlNiCo Blue 12". The Celestion website describes this speaker as having a "glorious dampened attack, warm lows, mellow upper-mids and brilliant belllike top-end." Guitar Player magazine has this to say about it: "The Blue is far and away the most tonally sophisticated -- as well as the loudest -- speaker in this roundup. Its chime and midrange complexity are truly magical, and it never sounded harsh or brittle. The Blue handles sparkling rhythms and milkshake-thick lead tones with equal poise, and is an unbelievably dynamic and multi-dimensional speaker that sounds great with any amp." We sampled this one in our usual, acoustically treated live room.
Zipped archive available for immediate download contains 566 impulse responses at 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96Khz sampling rates, 16/24 bit, and Axe-Fx ready sysex files. See IR Matrix.

Speakerbox • Weber Blue 12" • IR Library:
Impulse responses of a Weber Blue Dog 12". The Weber Speaker website describes this speaker as "aggressive, bright, with a strong midrange crang." Guitar Player magazine has this to say about it: "The Weber Blue Dog actually sounds creamier than the Celestion Blue that it's based on. At low volumes, the Blue Dog has an airy top-end (especially with single-coils) and sounds buttery smooth, yet distinct, when pushed. It lacks the immediate attack and midrange "crang" of the Celestion Blue, but if you're looking for a different sort of British sweetness, the [Blue Dog] is a superb choice."
Because we had already sampled a nice Celestion Blue, we wanted to do something a little different with this one, so we sampled it in a large, bright room, with high ceilings, corner bass trapping, a couple of funky blue velvet couches, and side wall diffusors. It makes for a "roomier" sound than our other collections.
Zipped archive available for immediate download contains 450 impulse responses at 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96Khz sampling rates, 16/24 bit, and Axe-Fx ready sysex files. See IR Matrix.

Speakerbox • Celestion G12H30 12" • IR Library:
Impulse responses of a 30 watt Celestion G12H. The Celestion website describes this speaker as having "a heavier magnet than the G12M, this faithful recreation captures the unmistakable mojo of late 60s rock guitar tones... It exhibits a pleasing, strong low-end, complex and buttery mid-range and a finely detailed top-end, the G12H is excellent for cranking out huge, dark power chords, with smooth and rich bridge pickup tones and flutey neck pickup tones"
Zipped archive available for immediate download contains 566 impulse responses at 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96Khz sampling rates, 16/24 bit, and Axe-Fx ready sysex files. See IR Matrix.

Money-back Guarantee... that's right... yup... we're that confident
Yeah, it may sound like a cheesy infomercial pitch, but we think offering a money-back guarantee on our IRs is better than offering a crippled demo, primarily because one of the benefits of the our IR library, beside the quality, is the
sheer number of choices you have to dial in the sound you want. A scaled back demo simply would not reflect that. So, if you buy one of our libraries and try them for up to 14 days and don't want to use them any more, then delete them and shoot
us an email (the address is on the Support page) with your paypal receipt (we have to have that for record keeping purposes) and we will give you a full refund. We encourage you to use the Cabinet Preview feature to get a good idea of how the cabinets will sound.

Compatible Software
We go through a great deal of trouble making sure our impulses work efficiently with existing convolution plugins, while still maintaining a natural reverb tail.
Our IRs should work with any convolution software that can load 3rd party impulses in WAV format, but the following are known to work:
- mixIR2 (FREE with complete BIGBox, Mac OSX, Windows)
- LAConvolver (FREE, Mac OSX)
- Poulin LeCab (FREE, Windows)
- Voxengo Boogex (FREE, Windows)
- AcmeBarGig iFace: RedWirez (Windows)
- Voxengo Pristine Space (Windows)
- Revalver Mk III (Windows, OSX)
- SIR II (Mac OSX, Windows)
- ProVerb (part of DP6, Mac OSX)
- Space Designer (part of Logic, Mac OSX)
- Perfect Space (part of SONAR, Windows)
- Altiverb (Mac OSX, Windows)
- Studio Devil (Mac OSX, Windows)
- Overloud TH-1 (Mac OSX, Windows)
- LiquidSonics Reverberate (Mac OSX, Windows)
- Mellomuse IR1A (Mac OSX, Windows)
- Cubase REVerence (Mac OSX, Windows)
- TL Space (Mac OSX, Windows)
If you want to monitor the wet (convolved) guitar signal in "real time" (low latency), your best bets are: LeCab, LAConvolver, Revalver, SIR II, or Boogex. For more tips on using our
impulses, check out our Tutorials section.
